November began with much fanfare with the Apple launch of the iPhone X, but the rest of the month also brought big cell phone promotions for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Verizon was busy changing promotions this month. Store representatives
had to stay on their toes to keep up.
At the beginning of November, Verizon continued their trade-in promotions, offering up to $300 towards the purchase of an Apple iPhone 8, Google Pixel, or the newly released iPhone X. The LG V30 had a $200 promotion as well. And with a trade-in of an Apple iPhone 7, Verizon offered a $200 discount off any iPad.
By the middle of November, the same $300 promotion was still available for the iPhone X and the iPhone 8. The deals for the Google Pixel models changed to up to 50% off with a trade-in of selected devices. The promotion for the Samsung Note8 and S8 was a $250 Visa Gift Card.
As Black Friday approached, the iPhone X promotion changed to $200 off any iPad along with the same promotion for the iPhone 7 and iPhone SE. Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note8 promotions were updated to buy-one-get-the-second-one 50% off.
For those signing up for an unlimited plan, Black Friday brought a new promotion: 50% off the Pixel 2, Galaxy S8 and Moto Z2 Force. Also with an unlimited plan, Verizon offered 35% off a Pixel XL 2, Galaxy S8 Plus and Note 8.
Verizon had additional Black Friday deals including $100 off select Android phones when signing up for an unlimited plan. On Thanksgiving and Black Friday, the discount applied to these phones as well: the Galaxy S6 and S7, Google Pixels, the LG V20 and G6, last year's Moto Z Force, and the Kyocera DuraForce Pro. On the Saturday and Sunday after Black Friday, the promotion also applied to the LG V30 and Asus ZenFone AR.
For Cyber Monday, Verizon added $100 off selected phone models and extended the $300 trade-in offer to any iPhone with a qualifying device trade-in.
AT&T continued to offer their Next and Next Every Year plans, but by the middle of the month, AT&T added a buy-one-get-one free (BOGO) promotion for the Galaxy S8 product line. The promotion required that both lines have either a Next or Next Every Year plan.
The week of Thanksgiving, AT&T extended the BOGO promotion to the iPhone 8 product line and then included the Galaxy Note8 on Black Friday.
Cyber Monday added a free iPhone 7 if you signed up for DirecTV and a Next plan.
The last week of November, AT&T continued the BOGO promotion on the iPhone 8, iPhone X, and Samsung Galaxy S8 product line. The LG V30 BOGO promotion had a choice of a free V30, G6, or X Venture.
Sprint began the month offering a $350 trade-in promotion for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. This was the best promotion for the new iPhone X even before the official launch. If you switched to Sprint and chose a Sprint Flex lease plan you could get 50% off a Galaxy S8 or an Essential Phone.
The lease offer continued with a BOGO promotion on the LG V30, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.
By the middle of the month, Sprint had a short promotion that seemed too good to be true. If you switched your service from Verizon and brought your own phone, Sprint would give you a free year of their Unlimited plan- no annual contract or activation fee.
For Black Friday, Sprint offered 50% lease deals for the Galaxy S8 and Note8 product lines along with the Moto Z2 Force. Cyber Monday continued with the $350 trade-in deal on the iPhone X and 8 and a BOGO promotion on the iPhone 7 product line.
T-Mobile began the month with a promotion of $300 off an iPhone X or iPhone 8, no trade-in required, via monthly credit. The Pixel 2 and XL were 50% off, with the money saved going towards a Visa prepaid card. There were several offers on LG phones including $500 off two LG V30s and a BOGO promotion on the LG G6 and V20.
Thanksgiving week, T-Mobile rolled out more BOGO promotions on the following models: LG G6, V20, V30 and V30+, Samsung S8, S8 Plus, and the iPhone 8 (64GB). Also, the Motorola Moto Z Force Edition had a $250 price drop. These offers continued through Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
BestBuy promotions included $200 off a Samsung Galaxy Note8, S8 or S8+ when activating a new account for Verizon. This increased by $100 from the previous month’s promotion on Galaxy S8 products.
After the launch of the iPhone X, BestBuy offered a $250 BestBuy gift card with the trade-in of select Apple iPhones.
BestBuy had a $350 promotion for the Galaxy Note8, S8 and S8+ for Sprint and Verizon, which exceeded the best promotion from Verizon by $50.
On Black Friday, BestBuy offered a $150 discount on an iPhone 6 if you signed off on a Verizon, AT&T or Sprint installment plan. The LG G6, if bought through Sprint, for $119 was a significant discount, and the Moto Z2 Play for $191 with Verizon was too. Their Cyber Monday promotion included $300 off the Samsung Note8 and S8 products through Verizon.
One of the additional promotions that BestBuy usually has is free financing for a limited amount of time. This provides an option, if you prefer, to purchase a phone instead of rolling the payments into a carrier plan.
Verizon stepped up this month with a large number of promotions throughout November. AT&T got into the holiday spirit with BOGO deals. Sprint had a unique carrier switch promotion aimed at Verizon. T-Mobile had several promotions from the previous month, and BestBuy upped an existing offer from the previous month. As expected, many new offers came with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but will promotions increase as we head into the December, gift-buying season? I’ll let you know in January.
