Here at HYLA Mobile, an Assurant company, we usually expect a flurry of activity from about August through the end of the year as OEMs begin to unveil their new flagship phones. There are promotions around the launches and also for the holiday shopping season. We then see the activity flatten out dramatically after the end of the year as many promotions go away.
Here’s the thing—it is still a very good time to purchase a new phone. First of all, major carriers and OEMs are extending their usual holiday deals into the new year—something that we typically haven’t seen before. Customers should definitely take advantage of this now before the deals expire.
Second, those hungering for the newest and best technology still have an appreciable opportunity whether they prefer iPhones or Android phones. Apple released their latest devices just three months ago and Samsung just introduced their latest smartphones.
Samsung’s latest 5G devices; the Galaxy S21 and S21+, and S21 Ultra; boasts a super high-resolution camera, their fastest processor yet, and improved battery life.
Competing Carriers are Keeping Prices Low
Let’s face it—2020 was not the best year for smartphone sales. Carriers, OEMs, and retailers saw sales plummet over 20% in the first six months of 2020 when compared with previous years. The fact that sales figures “only” declined 5.7% in Q3 was considered excellent news.
Now that it’s Q1 all over again, carriers, OEMs and retailers want to begin the new year with a strong start and trade-in is one of the leading tools they are using. As of Feb. 9, Verizon and AT&T still had very attractive trade-in promotions on 5G devices, whether you wanted a Samsung 21, an iPhone 12 or a Google Pixel 5. Depending on the carrier, the device being purchased, and the device being traded in, consumers can receive up to $800 in trade-in. Consumers will find similar deals when purchasing devices directly from the OEMs or many retailers. These are just some of the trade-in deals happening right now.
High Expectations for Low Costs in 2021
2021 will see carriers continue to rollout 5G across the country, and new 5G devices will launch throughout the year. Carriers will need consumers to continue to upgrade to 5G devices to see an ROI on their latest deployments. And as we have seen over the last few months, trade-in will likely be the catalyst used to encourage consumers to part with their existing devices.
Consumers should not assume that the best deals have passed them by and that they have to wait until the end of the year for new ones to come out. As we are in the midst of an upgrade supercycle; carriers, retailers, and OEMs will want to keep the current momentum going and trade-in will be a win-win for everyone.
